Monster's Aren't Real

As I lay me down to go to sleep,
In my dreams I'm counting fluffy sheep.
But all that I can see in my head
Are the monsters born of fear and dread.
My mummy tells me never to fear,
That there are no monsters far or near.
The beasts which I can see in my dream
Are never as scary as they seem.
The shadows which dance upon the wall
Are not the horrors I think at all.
They are just shapes hidden in the gloom,
Which I imagine as lurking doom.
The sharp claws which on the windows scratch
Do not seek my soul to grab and snatch.
They are but branches blown in the breeze,
And once she shows me, my heart's at ease.
There are no monsters beneath my bed,
Nor nightmares that long to see me dead.
There are no teeth that hunger to bite,
Hiding in the shadows of the night.
Mummy says for me to have some faith
That cosy in bed I will be safe.
Know no devils in my closet dwell;
To forget my worries, to sleep well.
But the things which in the night go bump
Wouldn't hurt mummy with just a thump.
And mummy can deny monsters no more
When daddy comes storming through the door.
